From Kitchen Experiments to Süss Candy: How a Frustrated Mom Created Something Sweet

When I started making candy in my kitchen in 2023, I never imagined it would become Süss Candy. I was simply a fed-up mom who was tired of watching artificial ingredients poison my kids through the candy they loved.

The Breaking Point

Like many parents, I found myself constantly battling the ingredient lists on store-bought candy. Red dye 40, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors I couldn't pronounce, it felt like I was contributing to my children's poor health every time I gave them a treat. But kids deserve candy, don't they? They deserve that joy, that sweetness, those special moments. I just wanted them to enjoy it without the guilt weighing on my shoulders.

The First Batch

One evening, looking through my pantry, I realized I had everything I needed to make taffy. No formal culinary training, no fancy equipment, just a mom with ingredients and determination. Growing up in Austria, I'd spent countless hours in the kitchen experimenting with recipes and trying to recreate the flavors I remembered from my childhood. My mother was from Vienna and worked as an oil painter, and I think her creative spirit found its way into my kitchen. Something clicked that night.

That first batch turned out surprisingly great. The kids loved it, and more importantly, I knew exactly what went into every piece.

When Passion Meets Business

My husband Noah, ever the numbers person, ran some calculations on those early batches. Each piece cost fractional cents to make, yet delivered the same joy as expensive store-bought alternatives. A business was born from that simple observation.

Honoring My Heritage

The name “Süß” came naturally, it's German for “sweet,” honoring my Austrian heritage. But it represents more than just the language of my childhood. Growing up with EU food ingredient standards shaped my understanding of what candy could be. In Europe, many of the artificial colors and preservatives common in American candy are restricted or banned entirely. I wanted to bring that same commitment to quality to my own creations.

The candies I make today are adaptations of things I remember from growing up in Austria, flavors and treats that shaped my idea of what candy should taste like, made with ingredients that meet the standards I grew up with.

The Süß Standard

Every batch I make follows those EU-level standards. I use plant-based colors, natural and organic flavors, and the highest quality ingredients I can source. Whether it's our signature Celtic Sea Salt Caramels or our popular Fan Favorite Chews, each piece is made with the same care I put into that very first batch of taffy.

Small Batches, Big Love

I still don't have formal culinary training, and honestly, I'm glad. My approach remains intuitive and experimental, just like those early days in my kitchen. Every Freeze Dried Caramel and every Blue Raspberry Lollipop starts with the same question that began this journey: what would I feel good about giving my own children?

The Sweet Truth

Three years later, Süß Candy has grown beyond what I ever imagined, but the mission remains unchanged. We're proving that candy doesn't have to compromise health for happiness. From our Best of Both Worlds Bundle to seasonal specialties, every piece carries that original promise: real ingredients, real care, real sweetness.

Sometimes the best businesses aren't born from grand plans or market research. Sometimes they're born from a parent's love and the simple belief that we can do better.

What started in frustration has become my passion. Thank you for being part of this delicious journey.
